As we discussed in our guide to flange basics, flanges are used to connect pipe systems to a variety of equipment and components while also allowing for greater flexibility during the assembly, disassembly, and maintenance of the pipe system.

Lap Joint flanges are one type of flange that is commonly used in the design of piping and duct systems.

In order to ensure safe, reliable operation and the most cost-effective operation of flanges and piping systems, it is necessary to understand both how the component functions and how various design differences will impact performance. The purpose of this guide is to provide an in-depth examination of the operation of lap joint flanges, as well as the various options available when purchasing a lap joint flange and the key considerations to keep in mind when purchasing them.
Lap Joint flanges are known by a variety of names, including the following:

Back-up flanges are used in the event of a failure.
Van Stone flanges, Loose Ring flanges, Loose Hubbed flanges, Loose Hubbed flanges

They consist of two parts: a Lap Joint Stub End that is butt welded to the pipe and a backing lap joint flange that is slid onto the pipe before welding the Stub End. Slip On flanges and Lap Joint flanges are very similar in appearance.

Lap Joint flanges, on the other hand, have a radius at the intersection of the flange face and the bore to accommodate the flanged portion of the Lap Joint Stub End, making them only compatible with Lap Joint Stub Ends and not with other flanges. Materials for Lap Joint flanges and Lap Joint Stub Ends vary, and may even differ within a single implementation, in order to provide greater cost flexibility while maintaining structural integrity. A variety of stainless steel, carbon steel, and other alloy materials are commonly used for Lap Joint flanges, as well as other exotic alloys.

Due to the fact that these flanges are available in standard dimensions, just like other flange types, they are simple to integrate into existing piping systems or to use in conjunction with other piping components. Stub Ends are also designed to match both the pipe material and the wall schedule of your piping process in order to maintain both the inside and outside diameters of your piping process. It is common for this style to be used in engineered piping systems that have critical wall thickness specifications.

Stub Ends are also available in two different lengths — MSS or Short lengths and ASA or Long lengths — as well as a variety of face finishes to meet your specific requirements. MSS and Short lengths are available in MSS and Short lengths, respectively. Surface treatments such as serrated or phonograph finishes, for example, can aid in the improvement of gasket adhesion.
Rolled Angle Rings, also known as Vanstone Rings or Vanstone Rolled Angle Rings, provide benefits that are comparable to those provided by Lap Joint Stub Ends, despite the fact that their designs and installation requirements are similar. However, there are subtle differences between the two that will frequently make one preferable over the other in the majority of situations. There should be no confusion about the fact that Rolled Angle Rings are not registered fittings.

The two-part design, similar to Lap joint pipe flanges, allows the rolled angle ring and backing flange to be made of different materials, allowing for greater flexibility and cost optimization potential in the manufacturing process. This could be demonstrated by using a 316L stainless steel rolled angle ring with a carbon steel, galvanized backing flange as an example. The backing flange can also rotate freely on the pipe, which makes it easier to align the flange with the pipe.
